Academic Senate Task Force on Climate Change

The Chair of the UCI Academic Senate has convened a new task force to make recommendations on how the campus should move forward on issues related to climate change. Senate leadership will discuss these recommendations with the Cabinet and advocate for any Cabinet-endorsed recommendations with the appropriate campus administrators. We hope the group can reach some recommendations by the end of May 2022.

The Task Force is invited to discuss the following questions:

  • How can we increase the visibility of climate change research and mitigation efforts on campus (inreach)?
  • How can we break down silos across programs and foster emerging collaborations and communications related to climate change research?
  • What are the primary needs of the climate change research community on campus (e.g., funding sources, data sharing platform)?
  • How can the Senate best advocate for campus policy changes to ensure UCI continues to be a leader in climate change research and mitigation?
  • How can we build on the Bending the Curve pedagogical initiative to educate our campus community and the public on climate change and its potential solutions?
  • What academic programs in the areas of climate and sustainability should the campus consider developing? Are there innovative, alternative models for organizing climate-related programs that may go beyond the existing structures at UCI? What can we learn from approaches taken at other universities (e.g., Stanford and Columbia)?
